''Everything is a construct''
''Tik tok, my friend''
Who is he?
Jax is a multicolored chronling with a heavy weight on his shoulders. As a chronling his duties entail keeping track of time, specifically the countdown on the clock around his neck. It also so happens that his particular countdowns revolve around a curse given to him by the grim reaper, following a fateful accident. So now he wanders the earth, desperately trying to break the curse while also doing his duties to the grim reaper. The rare occasions when he is not working or searching, he lives in a home surrounded by his plants, vinyl player and other old gadgets that he refuses to give up on.

Name: Jax
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Mate: None
Birthday: 7th of May
Sexuality: Hates labels, doesn't care.
Likes: Passion fruit, being near water (swimming etc), collecting sand, transparent (his favorite color), spicy food, vintage objects, his gameboy color.
Dislikes: Mint, bees, bridges, the concept of a favorite color, coriander, being alone for a long period, having to cook for himself, very new technology.
Personality: While Jax does have a serious and somewhat intimidating exterior, do not let yourself be fooled. As you get through the layers - which people seldom do - he softens up a lot, revealing his caring and generous, though lonely nature. See, this chronling craves strong bonds and connections, but since he struggles to build and maintain them, what people often see is his unintentionally cold and rejecting side. But in the rare case that you're able to get past this, you will meet what one might say is the real Jax. The one who craves to be wanted so bad he might allow himself to be manipulated. The quick-witted, intensely loyal, unconventional and annoyingly argumentative Jax. The one for whom nostalgia has taken such a hold that he refuses to play on any console other than his game boy, and prices his vinyl player more than his left lung. The one who usually breaks away from traditional norms such as having favorite colors, always saying they're a waste of time. The one who can drive the people close to him nuts through his love for debating trivial matters. If you dig even deeper, you will also get to see his deep-seated wish for a purpose in life, one that simmers far down beneath the surface and results in him usually being a bit tense by nature.

His positive traits:
Caring: Though one might not expect it at first, Jax carries a sensitive softness within him that blossoms near other people. For this reason, he makes an excellent listener, shoulder to cry on, and secretly gets deep satisfaction from the part of his job revolving palliative - and death care. Knowledgeable: Being a timeless creature, and having met so many different personalities and stories in his travels, has its perks in terms of knowing the facts and trivia of the world. Loyal: When you have broken through his walls and has formed the rarity that is a close bond with Jax, he is fiercely loyal to you. Even now, after everything Felix has done, this chronling can’t help it but still feel strong remainders of the loyalty towards his former partner. Dedicated: No matter what needs to be solved, Jax faces it with dedicated eagerness and a problem-solving attitude. No obstacle is deemed too great, perhaps except his own personal hell. |
His negative traits:
Detached: One might say he is detached from reality due to his disconnected attachment style with others. This is only because he is very sensitive, but struggles understanding and expressing his emotions. For this reason he usually remains a somewhat anonymous person for those around him, due to many not being able to break down his layers and discover what is truly beneath them. Ruminator: While his nostalgia for timeless treasures such as the gameboy is mostly wholesome, it also has a dark side. Sometimes, being unable to let go of the past gives him more pain than happiness. Desperate/despairing: With his circumstances growing more and more hopeless he is slowly being driven to desperation in which methods he will use to get out of it. In his worst times he is willing to give up anything to get even a moment of peace, no matter if it’s sacrificing his friends, health or safety. Anxious: The weight of the world gets to him more than the average person, leaving him chronically tense with both trivial and deeper anxieties. Due to this he can tend to struggle in situations that most people usually handle with ease. |
History: No one knows where he is from or where he once belonged. Some say that when they first met him, he gave them the impression that perhaps he belonged nowhere and everywhere, just like time itself. This man who makes a lasting impression on everyone he meets once did so when he sought out the Grim Reaper, desperately looking for work under his wing. He would never say the true reason why, other than lame lies such as wanting to play his part in this world. It took some insistency, but the Reaper eventually accepted Jax because of the usefulness of his chronling abilities and clock. Soon after he joined the team, he befriended someone who would change his life forever - Felix.
Felix and Jax formed a slow burning bond that blossomed into friendship and very intuitive cooperation. From this, they became teammates and one of the most successful duos within Reaper’s team. They reached the point of being able to communicate without saying a word. And eventually the communication became deeper, and physical, though this part was always kept a deep secret from the rest of the world.
After some time, Felix started coming up with some unorthodox ideas and shady opinions. He would start questioning the purpose of their work and altruicity, wondering why they never sought fame or payment when their skill was so impeccable. Jax, blinded by love and the fear of losing such a close bond, ignored the comments and told himself it was just Felix being restless and joking. If only he had known the mistake he made, because it would later be revealed that Felix had become a hitman.
For one faithful day, Felix and Jax were sent on a particularly important mission, where the former ended up killing the wrong person because that was in his contract as a hitman. When the Reaper found out, all the signs seemed to point towards Jax, and so he received the blame. Out of panic, Felix agreed to the blame, making a nightmare come true for his chronling lover, who knew that the situation looked too bad for him to get out of. And thus their relationship died, together with Jax’ trust in others.
As a punishment, Jax received a lifetime of bad missions on his clock. This entails short countdowns, usually the span of a week, that ends in the chronling seeing a horrible death unfold. Not only that, but it would always be the death of someone he had met or cared about - and he would never know if it was merely a hallucination or the real death. And so each time it happens, Jax travels to the person to see if they are okay or if he can say farewell and help them on their way to the afterlife. This is very straining for him mentally, emotionally and physically though, and the curse has begun to drive him to desperation.
Thus he is now on a journey to try to break the clock and free himself from the cursed missions given to him by the Grim Reaper.

Relations:
Felix (Former partner/lover):
Cook (Rival):
Cook and Jax have almost become natural enemies due to them being on different reaper teams. You’d think it would all be confined to pure friendly bickering between the two of them, since they after all serve the same community and technically work together. But alas these two have made it their life mission to one-up each other at everything and anything. Be it as simple as finishing their cereals first, you bet they’d be eating that so fast one of them would nearly choke to death by the end. The question remains: is there still a form of respect, tenderness and brotherhood between them? Some of their other reaper mates would probably say so, although these two would never agree to it themselves.

Fears and phobias
Death:
It’s quite ironic that Jax fears the one thing he is surrounded by the most. You would think he would become desensitized to all of this by now, but being constantly reminded and surrounded by death and life ending truly does get to him. It does not help when his curse shows everyone he loves being brutally murdered either, and the images continue to remain scarred into his mind.
Nightmares:
Being awake almost feels like a nightmare in itself, so it’s a shame that Jax rarely gets a break even in his dreams. One might say this is how his caffeine addiction started, due to him refusing to sleep in fear of having to go through another nightmare. His lack of sleep has caused him to become quite paranoid, amplifying his already existent fear of sleeping, as well as his general anxiety.
His visions becoming reality:
Although few of his visions have proven themselves to be real, each one he gets only amplifies his fear of the next one being real. This is perhaps the worst part of his curse - not knowing. Each time his countdown reaches zero, he has to deal with the schrödinger’s cat-like scenario where he won’t know if they’re truly dead until he has checked for himself.
Autophobia:
Even though most of his life consists of his solitary routine, he still has the fear of becoming completely alone one day. Just like the quote he read in some old book in a hipster library somewhere, ‘solitude is fine but you need someone to tell that solitude is fine’. This is something he won’t admit to anyone, though the fear and consequent sensitivity to loneliness runs deep.
Dreams and hopes
Being able to break the curse/the clock:
The bane of his life that he wants to end. At times he just wishes he could abandon all the duties that surround him, and start over again with blank pages. Realistically though he knows this is impossible, and therefore stays sane by instead doing smaller tasks that help him realize his own potential such as taking care of plants or helping out strangers. Yet, he continues his search for ways to potentially break the clock, although to no avail thus far.
Having enough free time to maintain a garden:
Although seemingly too mundane and slow-paced for Jax, maintaining a garden has always been something he would want to do. The idea of nurturing flowers into growth over time softens his heart. Part of this is also connected to him wanting to feel like he is wanted, and helpful to people in some way.
Beating Cook’s Tetris score:
He has to be the best. Enough said. (Although he has a little inkling that Cook cheated, but no one believes him.)
Finding a larger life purpose:
At times, his set-in-stone duties as a chronling and his seemingly impossible quest for freedom seem pointless. Somewhere deep inside, he yearns for a larger life purpose to ground himself with. Jax is hopeful that once he is able to break the clock and get rid of the curse, that he will truly become free, and able to live his life in any way he would like. With this he hopes a fulfilling life purpose will naturally follow.

Quirks:
- Strokes his left horn 3 times for good luck (usually when checking ''victims'') - He smells like chai - He is addicted to caffeine and drinks a minimum of 7 cups a day. (3 on his good days, on his bad days he does not keep count) - He is infamous for his time-related puns (traditions are a waste of time) |
Secrets:
- He wasn't responsible for the failed mission. - Struggles to get over Felix, and the bond they shared. - Wishes he was never born a chronling. - Lacks confidence in his work abilities. - Regrets not being friendly towards Cook, due to Felix disliking him. - Still has a polaroid picture of Felix in his wallet |
Hobbies:
- Assisting the grim reaper. - Travelling both for good and bad reasons. - Playing on his game boy (tetris) - Fishing and swimming - Reading - Tending to plants - Listening to vinyl (Elvis, Pink Floyd, Lana Del Rey) |
Human appearance: Rustic though still stylish in his own way, Jax’s outer appearance catches his timeless essence perfectly. His dark hair is usually cut relatively short, though he does little to maintain it, and thus it most of the time looks charmingly disheveled. Much to his annoyance, his hair usually gets in the way of his somewhat reserved and striking pink eyes. If you look closely at the iris, you will also see a hint of turquoise hugging his pupil, which is slit. His clothing is old-fashioned yet with a new touch, as he is often found wearing old sweaters, shirts, and coats. The color palette is always different shades of black or grey, turquoise and pink. Jax also has some other, more personal touches to his appearance. He always wears a clock with white and black band on his left hand, with a pink display. A tattoo of a pink skull with an x behind it stretches out across his back. Perhaps most surprisingly, he wears nail polish almost religiously, and never takes it off. The color? 50% chance you guessed it. Pink.
Animal appearance: With a strong yet lean build and short fur, Jax would not look too threatening to the common stranger if it wasn’t for his intense markings. His main shades of grey dance around his fur to accentuate it and convey the depth of his character. Yet his personality shines through in his turquoise and pink markings - the dots covering all parts of his body, the blue spots on his hind legs, his special symbol on his upper back. Not to mention two of his trademarks - the pink cross on his face that starts between his eyes and stretches out to his cheeks, as well as the pink skull on the back of his tail. This is not to say, however, that he does not look threatening at all. For if it wasn’t enough with his long, pink claws, the sharp pink horns and his fangs, he also emits pink smoke that can seem ominous to the unfamiliar eye. Speaking of eyes, some say that his eyes are the most interesting thing about his looks. Not only are they mainly a striking pink color, which is uncommon in itself, but they also have an equally vivid turquoise color hugging a slit pupil.
